Ever since we took the camper home with the trailer, we recognized that we may need a bigger truck. We loved our F-150, and make no mistake, it had the power to tow this big trailer. I specifically bought it because of its towing capacity. I added the weight distribution hitch to help with the tongue weight and sway control. So why change, right?
Chalk the trip taking the camper home to user error, but the first real trip we experienced how the winds effect all 37 feet that's attached behind us. We were driving at higher highway speeds (60-65 MPH) this time. Although the trailer was not swaying back and forth (thanks to the weight distribution hitch), the cross winds would hit it like a sail and pull the back end of the truck with it. It was not 'white-knuckle' driving, but not comfortable either.
Our goal is to take the camper longer journeys than just across the Red River, Grapevine Lake, or the Bar-C, so we decided to upgrade to the F-250. Our new truck has 20,000 pounds of towing capacity, greater than 1,0o0 ft-lbs of torque, a diesel engine, and hopefully the last truck we buy for a very long time! We look forward to taking some much longer camping trips soon.
